Episode 3 - Sappho

This week I talk about Sappho, some science fiction, and your romance novel of the week.

Do you like women taking care of each other because they've been in a terrible plane crash? Do you want to read a book where someone is more or less cuddled back to life? Then check out the romance novel of the week:

Ice by Lyn Gardner

Check out these three very different approaches to science fiction. Chris Moriarty's books were some of my favorite reads of 2012. and feature my biggest literary crush in a long time, bad ass UN Peacekeeper Major Catherine Li.

Artificial Hearts: A Lesbian YA Short Story Collection by Sarah Diemer and Jennifer Diemer
Project Unicorn: A Lesbian YA Extravaganza!

Dust (Jacob's Ladder trilogy) by Elizabeth Bear

Spin State by Chris Moriarty
Spin Control by Chris Moriarty

If you're interested in Sappho, any of these books would make a great starting point for learning more. Carson's translations are sparse and lovely. The Sappho Companion packs a lot of information into one book and can point you towards a number of different areas to learn more about the poet--and what people have said about the poet throughout history.

If fiction is more your taste, both Jong and Freedman have written decent novels about Sappho that are worth checking out if you're interested in the area.

The Sappho Companion by Margaret Reynolds
If Not, Winter: Fragments of Sappho translated by Anne Carson
Sappho's Leap by Erica Jong
Sappho: The Tenth Muse by Nancy Freedman
